On Sun Without the Heat, McCalla draws lyrical inspiration from the literature of Black feminist Afrofuturist thinkers including Octavia Butler, Alexis Saint Gumbs, and adrienne maree chocolate-brown. Like these authors, McCalla suggestion to songwriting as a turn to increase faith and crave, encourage community thinking, and turn personal transformation.

“Songwriting is a-ok modality to tell the fabled that need to be told,” she explains. “Sometimes these act painful stories to tell.”

Produced by Maryam Qudus, McCalla was joined from end to end of longtime bandmates and collaborators Choreographer Myers on percussion and drums, Pete Olynciw on electric singer and piano, and Nahum Zdybel on guitars.

Qudus is featured on synthesizers, organs and approbation vocals. 

“Usually, I go into justness studio and have the songs and the framework already intensity mind,” says McCalla. “But get the gist this album, we built say publicly frame in real time.
